New council leader will be appointed on May 14
More details on Cllr Ian Edwards, who announced earlier this morning that he was standing down as Leader of Hillingdon Council, irrespective of the result of the polls today. A council statement described him as a former police borough commander and council chief officer, who has led the council for five years after being appointed in January 2021. The statement said that during his time as leader, he has modernised front line services while keeping council tax lower than nei

So what's been happening nearby?
Last night, two of our reporters, Julie Agha and Ryan Leonard, attended the election count in neighbouring Ealing. Unlike Hillingdon, the count was carried out overnight. Ealing’s Labour council group experienced a significant loss, as many of its seats swung to the Liberal Democrats, Greens and even an independent candidate. Although the borough remains majority Labour, the losing councillors were visibly agitated receiving the results throughout the night. Labour ended the

What will the front page be for 2026?
Well, that was a bit of an early shock at Hillingdon. Ian Edwards, the face of the council for several years, has officially announced he is not going to be standing again as leader, even if his Tory group retains control of the council. We don't yet know, though, whether even if he had carried on, he would still be council leader by the end of the day - or whether another party would be in control. So, will we see a completely different picture from four years ago when the

Ian Edwards to step down as Leader of Hillingdon Council
Long-serving Hillingdon Council chief Ian Edwards has announced his intention to step down as leader. The Conservative politician has served as leader of the council since 2021 and has been a councillor since 2014. The news follows the significant gains across England by Reform UK, but the picture in Hillingdon is not yet clear and Councillor Edwards said he was standing down because of the challenges ahead. He said: “Being the leader of this council has been the privilege

Reform UK takes control of Havering in London breakthrough
By Nathanael Lawrence Reform UK has taken control of Havering Council, marking the party’s first council victory in London. With 40 of 55 seats declared, Reform has won 30 councillors passing the 28 seats needed for a majority. The result puts the party ahead of the resident’s association, which had 8 seats, while Labour and the Conservatives had none. This marks a significant gain for reform as the party continues to make advances in the Local election.

The national view
BY NATHANAEL LAWRENCE Hillingdon voters are waiting for the results of the borough’s local elections today, as the national picture suggests a difficult day for Labour and gains for Reform UK in parts in England. The BBC says its council seat change figures are calculated by comparing results with the party that won each seat the last time it was contested. This means its totals may look different from other media outlets that compare results with the make up of councils imme
